Clapham Junction

36 Hours of Vaguely Related Gay Scenes in South London
I have viewed a 90-minute download of the BBC version of this film [as well as this DVD]. A IMDB review of the 2007 BBC TV presentation of Clapham Junction starts, "Over a two day period a series of interconnected events impact a disparate group of [gay] Londoners," and that is quite accurate even if the period is actually about 36 hours.

Clapham Junction is a major train-connecting point in the London Borough of Wandsworth, not far from Lavender Hill, the location of The Lavender Hill Mob, but that was a comedy and this is certainly not.

In 2005, a gay man, Jody Dobrowski, suffered a horrendously brutal murder on Clapham Common, and a similar event is central to this film, which is an ultimately depressing and sometimes shocking exploration of contemporary urban gay sexuality. Some of the characters are deeply unpleasant, dishonest and self absorbed. But you will want to watch them...

A movie many will hate because it tells the truth
Whilst the loud voices of gay communities around the world jump on the 'we have the right to be married' band-wagon this movie takes us back to the truth: we have the right to be accepted, the right not to be bashed, not to be pilloried, that we have the right to love; but also, we are obliged to treat others with how we would like to be treated. This is a dark and despairing movie, so far from the West Coast US (or Sydney) gay party-boy image of gay men as it can get and it's about time it was made.

I'll defer to Bob Drake's excellent synopsis above. I'd add that the settings, the cinematography, the nuances and ironies are all first class; the actors superb some of the characters you want to hug, others need a good... no, I won't advocate violence. The dinner party scene juxtaposed to the riveting seduction scene and the reality of the outside world is brilliant.

If you think that we should be accepted; if you think that we have the right to love; if you think...

GREAT MOVIE, LOUSY MESSAGE
An excellent performance from all concerned in what is basically, in spite of its hype, a dark homophobic movie intended to make gays go back into the closet and bolt it from the inside. It concerns a serious of vicious attacks on gays in a particular neighborhood of London, presumably from real events. One is told that "neighbors" get together to fight back. Absolutely no such thing. Not one single attack is traced to its perpetrators. What one gets is a bunch of boring homophobic suburbanites having dinner while a gay boy gets murdered right outside. Kudos for having dared to expose the reality of sex between teens and adults. Many times, the teen is the aggressor, which was portrayed in the movie with chilling and heartbreaking accuracy. Wilby and Graves, of "Maurice" fame, are bit players in this one. Time has been kind to Graves, not Wilby. The movie belongs to the teen and his adult target. Real chemistry there! I like the movie, not the content.

The Girl Who Played with Fire

Action, Intensity, Chilling, Absorbing, A Fine Movie
"The Girl Who Played with Fire" - I did not read this second book in the Millennium trilogy so the movie was all new to me. Lisbeth Salander (perfectly delineated by Noomi Rapace, a great fit for the part)has been absent from Sweden for a year since we last met her in "Tattoo" living a life of luxury in various countries. She buys an apartment in Stockholm, but no one knows about it. The sexually ambivalent Lisbeth wants to get her dossier from her sadistic guardian, Bjurman, and when he isn't forthcoming, she warns him he may get another harsh dose of the previous punishment she doled out to him.
Meanwhile the movie follows a second track of narrative. Mikael Blomkvist (well-acted by Michael Nygvist), publisher of the muckraking magazine Millennium, has hired a free lancer to write an article about sex traffickers and the johns that are involved in the trade. He intends to out some of the prominent johns.
The two parallel stories are like procedural crime tales, and at a...

Fight fire with fire
Whoever edited the Millennium Trilogy into film is a genius. Stieg Larsson was a good author and his novels are captivating, but he can detail an idea to death. Whereas the screen writer for the films has taken pages, even chapters of Larsson's minutia and delivered the meaning and impact of Stig's over description in a raised eyebrow, a word or a deceptively simple scene. The Girl Who Played With Fire is a bridge between Dragon Tattoo and Hornet's Nest, yet the screen writer has delivered a film that stands on its own. I've read the books and thoroughly enjoyed the films. My husband has not read the books and was impressed by the films. We have seen Dragon Tattoo three times and Fire twice at the theater and can't wait for Hornet's Nest to come out this fall. Although this is a non English film, I found the captioning to be very easy to follow and it did not detract from enjoying the movie. Watch Dragon Tattoo first, then enjoy Fire and the brilliant acting of Noomi Rapace, this...

Good film
This a good movie, which in combination with it predecessor (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) has made for an suspenseful, enticing and intriguing series of films. One caveat, the level of explicit violence in these films are not for the faint of heart. Grown-ups only.

The Venture Bros.: Season Four, Vol. 1

sucker for the ventures
Love the series. Waiting for season 5> Hopefully it will only come in 1 volume. Breaking the season up sucked.

The Venture Bros are back and things have certainly changed!
Welcome back to the world of the Venture Bros. Last season we watched as the terriable secret of a one Doctor Thaddues "Rusty" Venture and his two sons Dean and Hank Venture unfold amid a war between the Monarch and O.S.I forces. We watch as Hank and Dean get used to Sgt. Hatred as there bodyguard, Brock Smapson gone rogue with H.E.L.P.E.R head stuck in his chest. Rusty going through theraphy to finally deal with the many issues that his own father inficlted upoon him as a child.
Watch as Dr. Orpheus must deal with his greatest rival and his biggest disapointment of a student the Outrider. Witness as his Master tells Triana that she can become a great magical user. The Guild is under attack as two of its council memebrs are kidnapped by someone with revenge on his mind and utter control of the Guild itself.
All that and more on this the Venture Bros Season Four part one on dvd.

Cheated!? You've Got to be kidding me
It's really very simple. Are you a fan of this show? Yes? Well then what is the point of whining about getting 8 instead of 13 episodes? Consistently one of the best shows on TV, Jackson and Doc have so much love and respect for both their subject matter and their audience that I have absolutely no doubts this 'half' season won't be chock full of extras to make up the balance of 'lost' material that would have been on a DVD set of an earlier season.

I'm poor as hell like most of y'all but the argument that you are getting fleeced is weak. When it comes down to it spending your money is something you do to reward the artists out there that kick ass all day and deserve compensation. It's not like anybody on this show is rolling in it. Sack up and buy something awesome.

As far as season 4.1 is concerned, it was definitely my least favorite in terms of themes and plot. It lacked the settling in feeling of meeting everyone that season 1 possessed as well as the...

1040: Christianity in the New Asia

post modernism in 1040 countries
Alright here's the break down.
Pros:
1. Show the heart of Asia (hungry for a touch of God)
2. Clips from South Korea gives lessons to the elders that it is not to late to come to Christ. IT IS good to wake up early morning to pray, if fact we should.
3. Clips from China shows that churches don't need laser-lights, disco lights, big stage, big mega shows, post modern pop christian artists to attract people to come to church. When the Holy Spirit works, it doesn't matter how small the church-building is, people can truly have intimacy with God.
4. The movie has few famous Asian artists, so OUR youth group can relate to it. (it is relevant to the target audience, for me). The guy from Meteor Garden is kinda famous..I'm surprise when DVD showed the Indonesian's clip, the people there couldn't recognize him. lol.
Also, I'm so proud of Jin The MC. I hope someone can mentor him in his walk, otherwise he might just do the talk not the walk. God bless him...

Everyone should watch this
Jaeson Ma did a great job producing this movie about what God is doing in Asia. Everyone should watch this, especially every Christian in the West.

lifts the lid on the true nature of the "church growth" movement
A perhaps unintended outcome of this documentary is its accurate depiction of what kind of "Christianity" is proliferating in mission fields these days--namely, the Charismatic, hip-hop, mystical stuff that bears scant resemblance to the Spirit-enabled missionary work in the Book of Acts.
Emotional manipulation rules the day from South Korea to Singapore, and Neo-Ozmanian "missionaries" in Taiwan practise a bizarre form of "prophetic evangelism," involving the use of visualization where they imagine and then find some guy on a motorbike and then ask if he would marry his girlfriend because the evangelists had seen a vision of a wedding ring on fire (in one of the Special Features).
The rest of it looks like run-of-the-mill Christian rock music, health-and-wealth, sort of stuff, and Asia needs it like they need a hole in the head.
Whom shall YHWH send, who will know nothing among them but Christ and Him crucified, who will tell would-be disciples to deny themselves, take...

R.E.M. - Live From Austin TX

Plays the Accelerate Songbook
I've been reading some blogs where critics bash this concert for being too Accelerate-sided but in my opinion this is not a bad thing.

I enjoyed R.E.M.'s album Accelerate, which came out in 2008. Some songs whose lyrics I have memorised appeared in that CD: 'Hollow Man', 'Houston', 'Supernatural Superserious', 'I'm Gonna DJ' and many others.

R.E.M. live from Austin, TX is heavy on Accelerate because the band were promoting the album at the time. Nine, out of seventeen songs (half the concert) are included in Accelerate. In fact, in you haven't purchased Accelerate, I would highly recommend that you get it through amazon.com (or however you prefer, just buy it).

Of course there are songs from other albums as well, but I am not an R.E.M.-ologist to identify them (though 'Drive' and 'Man on the Moon' are easily recognised as 'Automatic for the People' material). The pop hit 'Losing my religion' is also included.

The beauty of this DVD is...

Excellent DVD
If you are an R.E.M. fan, this is an excellent addition to your collection. The group plays new and old songs without a hitch.

Live R.E.M. is excellent as always
For the most part, this is a really good performance. But that's all it is: a performance. If you're looking for band interviews or behind the scene extras, look elsewhere. For the most part R.E.M. sticks to themselves and their music, but they do explain the meanings behind a few of their recent songs, and Michael Stipe even invite 2 small kids in the audience to climb on stage. Their music selection is strong, although a vast majority of it is obviously taken from Accelerate, as this was recorded only a few weeks before Accelerate was released.

While it's nice to see different songs like Fall On Me being played, Drive seems very awkward being placed between the loud Man-Sized Wreath and the up-tempo So. Central Rain. However, the music is still top-notch R.E.M., and they never miss a beat. Although I prefer their Live At The Olympia CD for its great variety in songs, Live from Austin is still strong in its own way, even if it's very short compared to their last 2 live...

What Lies Beneath

Hitchcock's ghost
Robert Zemeckis makes his homage to Hitchcock in What Lies Beneath, starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The Spencer's -Claire and Norman- are a supposedly happy and successful marriage. He is a prominent scientist, she's an ex musician that just left her only daughter at college. Free time takes Mrs. Spencer to spy on her neighbors, and from that activity she believes that a crime has been perpetrated next door. Insecure and nervous, Claire's paranoia grows as a series of paranormal events take place in her perfect home: doors open and close, electrical equipment turn on automatically, spectral visions in the bathtub. Are all these things related? That's one of the many secrets the movie hides.

A lonely home, secrets trying to be revealed, darkness, ghosts and the impending sensation that we are not sure what our eyes are seeing, What Lies Beneath has enough elements to hook you up for a scary time. Zemeckis takes advantage from every trick, cliche and...

Genuinely Creepy
In a time in which good horror/suspense movies are few and far between, Robert Zemeckis brings us a wonderfully and surprisingly taut and well-balanced thriller filmed in the grand tradition of the great Alfred Hitchcock. Finally, a horror movie that doesn't rely on fake blood and cheesy special effects to wow the crowd, or attempt to scare the feeble minded. The movie is centered around a couple, recently moved, who has discovered a supernatural presence in their new dwelling. The wife, Claire (played beautifully by Michelle Pfeiffer, in one of the best female performances of the year) believes it to be the ghost of the neighbor she suspects has been murdered. The husband, Norman (played well by Harrison Ford) of course, thinks she is crazy. The movie twists and turns around this basic central plot, leading to an ending that, although not terrible, I'm still not quite buying. The greatness of the movie comes not from the plot, but from the style in which the film was created...

Entertaining!
Robert Zemeckis gives us this non stop thrill ride starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. The story is about a couple (Ford and Pfeiffer) who's only child recently moves off to college leaving the two by themselves in a new home. The story quickly leaves that norm when the house turns out to be haunted by some sort of spiritual being. The film vaguely resembles a good Hitchcock movie with its' great work of shadows and an evil yet terrifying scene with a bath tub. The movie has a few surprises and scares that you don't expect which gives you more than enough reason to check this one out.

Beverly Hills, 90210: The Tenth and Final Season

Horrendous
I'm a big fan of the original 90210, but come on. The second Brandon left the show, it was over.
Seasons 9 & 10 were dreadful. Painful to watch. And the last straw was bringing Dylan's father
back. So I guess Toni died for nothing...

Just as good as I remember
Love it, I love that this dvd is available to take me back when I watched it on tv :)

Beverly HIlls 90210 season 10

Lawman / Kentuckian / Unforgiven

Correct package info
For those interested in this curious trio of solid Lancaster westerns, please note that there actually are only two discs-- 'Unforgiven' on single-sided picture disc and a flipper containing 'Lawman' and 'The Kentuckian.' Transfer quality ('Lawman' being the poorest of the three), bonus materials (what sparing there is), language options, etc., are identical to that which appear on each title's original MGM DVD release.

3 Outstanding Burt Lancaster Frontier Westerns
THE UNFORGIVEN has always been one of my favorite films right up there with THE BIG COUNTRY and THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. I have seen it many times. I love Dimitri Tiomkin's score and the photography. It is a very atmospheric and somewhat offbeat film. Tiomkin's score was recorded over in Italy giving it a very lyrical sound. It has always been an endearing film for me. The casting adds to the unusual mood of this film. Some character actors give some of their best performances in this film. John Saxon as Johnny Portugal, Audie Murphy as Cash Zachary and especially Joseph Wiseman as the mysterious and enigmatic Abe Kelsey add to the atmosphere and depth of this film. Abe Kelsey is such a ghostlike character coming into view and then quickly vanishing into the dustbowl moodily filmed by cinematographer Franz Planer. Some of the images are disturbing such as seeing Albert Salmi as suitor Charlie Rawlins meeting a rather grotesque and heartbreaking demise impaled with Kiawa arrows. The...

Katt Williams: 9 Lives

Very Disappointed
I love Katt but this documentary was not the Katt I actually saw in concert after a deployment to Iraq. It was a compilation of all his past (life run-ins with the law and previous dvds). As long as you want to see what you already know or have already heard in the news, you'll be ok, other than that DON'T WAIST YOUR MONEY (JUST LOOK AT HIS OLD DVDs).

Sorry Katt but I was truly disapponted in paying to see old material that is already on your other dvds!!!

Nothing new
I like Katt and his jokes so I was expeting new material not another documentary.

hope to see a new comedy show.

Maybe it's time for Katt to retire?
Very disappointed! This one may be good for those that know nothing about Katt Williams. Not sure if Katt had anything to do with this one but I will say, THIS WAS NOT EXPECTED. The selling point should not be "never-before-seen stand-up from Katt's early career", this gives the illusion that there is going to be some comedy involved (whether we've seen it or not). There was little to no comedy on this dvd; a lot of talk about Katt's life. We've see enough of that on television so spare me. Whoever thought this was a good idea, be more creative and come up with another hustle.

The Sound of Music (Three-Disc 45th Anniversary Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging)

Blu-Re-Mi!
After years and years and years of watching The Sound of Music on VHS and DVD, I thought I knew every blade of grass and every gust of wind visible in the movie. How wrong I was! You don't realize how much picture is lost with standard 480p releases until a monumental blu ray transfer like this comes along and provides a home viewing experience that literally feels like seeing the movie for the first time.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the best blu ray I own - and not just because The Sound of Music is probably the greatest movie ever made, but because the picture quality is truly that beautiful. And that makes sense, considering the movie was filmed in 70mm and could contain so much more data than ordinary 35mm. Also, from what I understand, the restoration process was taken extremely seriously and done with the highest technology possible. There's a reason why so many artists are pushing blu ray, and it's because for the first time people can experience their...

Blu-ray: Magnificent! The definitive release of "Sound of Music"
"The Sound of Music", the 1965 20th Century Fox musical which would capture the world with its memorable music and it's touching storyline and continues to have thrived through various generations and will continue to thrive for many generations hereafter.

The film is an adaptation of a popular Broadway play which is based on the memoir "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" written by Maria von Trapp. The von Trapp family are known for escaping from the Nazis in Austria after the Anschluss (the annexation and occupation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938).

The original musical based on the book featured music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II (both Rodgers and Hammerstein were known for their music for "Oklahoma!", "Carousel", "State Fair", "South Pacific", "The King and I" to name a few) which led to the book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. The Broadway production began in 1959 starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel and would later...

The Hills are Alive in Blu
WOW...that's all I can say. I've been waiting for this one to come out on Blu-ray for quite awhile...and I can truly say, it was worth the wait. Finally, this movie looks like it did in the theater...the colors, details and clarity are amazing...This movie has never looked good on VHS, Laserdisc OR DVD...Finally Blu-ray does it justice. Kudo's to FOX for giving this such a nice treatment. I just bought my copy and watched it all the way through...was only going to watch bits but got caught up all over again in the magic. I even put in the DVD and jumped back and forth to compare...and there just wasn't anything to compare...the Blu-ray blows the old copy away. Just watch the scenes of Do-Re-Mi or the Church Wedding scene and be amazed by what Blu-ray can do...the details in the church are stunning...every detail from the carpet to the candles and gold backgrounds just stand out perfectly...looks as close to the print I saw in the theater last year as I've ever seen...For all those...

V: The Complete First Season

John May lives!
In about 99% of science fiction, aliens come to earth in two ways: charging in to invade, or they come in peace... so they can invade quietly. The second kind are the main problem in "V: The Complete First Season," a remake of the 1980s series/miniseries about mysterious alien Visitors who come to Earth with some nasty ulterior motives. While this remake suffers from some "Lost syndrome," it's a sleek, complex story with an intriguing cast of characters.

City-sized alien ships have appeared over twenty-nine cities worldwide, and the aliens' leader "Anna" (Morena Baccarin) declares that, "We are of peace." The Visitors offer their advanced technology to better the world, and cause massive changes -- social, religious, medical, and so on.

While hunting a terrorist cell FBI agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell) stumbles across an anti-Visitor resistance -- and the shocking discovery that not only are the visitors reptilian creatures in humanoid skins, but some...

Great Series!
I didn't know what to expect when I watched the first episode of V, but I ended liking it so much. Now it has become my second favorite show to Lost. The show has talented actors, interesting story, and great special effects. The show was on for four episodes until it took a long break, then came back even better than before. The show is fast paced with so many twists and turns, you don't know what to expect. Definitely buy V: The Complete First Season, you will not be disappointed. I hope it gets picked up for a second season.

Great show - not just for sci fi fans
V is one of the best new shows on television - the best in my opinion. It pays homage to the original 1980 miniseries, but it uses modern themes to appeal to today's audience. The characters (well, some of them) are very likable, especially the V's cold (and yet ooh so hot) leader Anna, played by Morena Baccarin, and the resistance group with a mix of FBI Agent Erica, played by the ever-watchable Elizabeth Mitchell, a Priest, a V-turned-human, and a Machiavellian take-no-prisoners mercenary. A lot of people watch for the sci-fi premise, which seems very well done (although I don't have too much experience). The main reasons I watch are actually the characters and the suspense. We know that the V's are here to exploit us, and they're being nice to us so we know they need us for something... but we don't know what yet.

Like every other show out there, V does have some inconsistencies in the plot, and you have to suspend disbelief a little more than you'd like. But...

Metallica / Slayer / Megadeth / Anthrax: The Big Four - Live From Sofia Bulgaria

Great gift for the music fan...RIFFS!!
This is a review for the blu-ray 2 disc set. On the first disc you get Anthrax, followed by Megadeth and then Slayer's set. On the second disc you get the Metallica set and the bonus features. I will break down the setlists at the bottom of the review.

First the sound is amazing in my opinion, as is the picture. I thought the overall mix on all four sets was really good. I've read the one review about Mustaine's vocals, I didn't notice it, so can't really comment on whether it has or hasn't been remixed. It wasn't a concern for me personally.
The bonus features include a behind the sccenes documentary which includes interviews and a peak at the Am I Evil? rehearsal backstage which is just good fun. I like back stage stuff and interviews so I dig that extra feature.

So for the bulk features of this "product" I give it five stars, good picture, good sound, bonus features are nice added touch. I couldnt really find a reason to deduct any stars based on...

A thrash metal primer
If you want to induct someone into the world of thrash metal, you can't do much better than showing them this Blu-Ray disc. While it's true that the bands all show their age a bit, there are enough highlights here to recommend a purchase. The video is a bit soft, but acceptable. Sound quality is great. As for the performances:

Anthrax puts on a good show and vocalist Joey Belladonna acquits himself well, still managing to bust out a couple of air raid screams. Since it's Joey singing, the set is naturally heavy on the group's early albums. But a real surprise is when they play "Only" from their Sound of White Noise album; I was under the impression that Joey wouldn't sing any stuff from the John Bush era, but here it is. Plus there's a nice homage to the recently departed Ronnie James Dio when they suddenly break into Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell" in the middle of "Indians."

Megadeth's set is tight, focusing on older tunes. I suspect that other comments here about...

good concert
Having grown up during these bands' heyday, it's nice to see all of them still going strong (some stronger than others).

Anthrax put on an energetic set which was varied as far as the set list goes, well mixed, and flawlessly executed from a musical standpoint. Megadeth's set was ok, but Mustane seems to have lost something as a frontman...the band is really tight, though. Slayer...what can you say? It's hard to replicate the sound & fury of their live shows, but this video did a pretty good job of it. Dave Lombardo is a maniac and the drums were nicely placed in the mix, the guitar players put on a clinic, and Tom's vocal's sounded pretty good (as usual you couldn't hear his bass). This performance makes it worth the price of the DVD alone. I have mixed feelings about the Metallica set. Kirk played brilliantly, as did Robert Trujillo. James' rhythm guitar reminded why he's one of the best, his vocals were pretty good, too, and he had a nice rapport with the crowd. But...

Red Green Show: The Toddlin' Years - Seasons 1994-1996

An ICON in goofy entertainment
Laughter is unavoidable, even for girls. This is the earlier years of a show that went on for 15 years, but these episodes are at a point in the history that Red Green had found himself. It is delightful family viewing. You can overdose on this much comedy, so beware, take Red Green in smaller doses, and spread the belly laughs over some time. But it's hard not just going from one episode to another. Red Green and cast are addictive.

This is redneck Possum Lodge tom-foolery that is held together by Red Green's signature uses of duct tape. He is a master at re-invention as well as putting together the quirkiest assortment of lodge members imaginable.

Rated LOL, the 9 disc box comes in 3 cases. My copies of Red Green seem to circulate through the family. Show someone one episode and they want to borrow the entire set. Everyone can find some fun with the Red Green family. I became acquainted with Red Green through the shows on TV. Lovely to have them on DVD for...

Best Episodes of Series
So many of these episodes show Red Green (Steve Smith) and Harold Green (Patrick McKenna) at their best. Since Red has such outrageous ideas, Harold is kind of needed to supply some rationality. Each has a different perspective, and yet they understand each other so well. I understand that shows need to change direction and grow; still, I didn't like some of the changes after Harold "left" the show in later seasons. In any case, I think the later changes make me nostalgic for some of the earlier seasons, when the material seemed really fresh. For example, the "word game"--which came to be a part of every episode through the show's end--was introduced in the fifth season. Edgar K. B. Montrose (Graham Greene) made a lot of appearances in these episodes. Dalton Humphries actually sold things at his shop and combed his hair. Some of these episodes I hadn't seen in many years, and yet I was surprised by how much I remembered. I strongly recommend Seasons Four-Six to Red Green fans...

RedGreen
These are among the best ever of Red Green shows. We have all the seasons and seem to enjoy these years the most. Thanks
